I didn’t expect to see them. I was like, what are you doing here? A container’s coming through! Why didn’t you notice the people until you were about to paint over them? That’s a good question. I was callous. I was in this nonﬁgurative, callous world until I almost ﬂattened someone in my painting! Are you making more animations?
What does an average day look like for Jay Nelson? I hang out with my daughter, Romy, in the morning and we walk the dog to check the waves, maybe surf, maybe not, and then start working around midday. Work can be painting, building structures or drawing. I try to stay close to home and the ocean. My wife and I built a studio in the backyard.
