Partner, K & L Gates Everyone everywhere is talking about the demise of the billable hour. Given its long standing, it’s worth asking: Is this the "new normal" or just temporary hype?
Some argue that we will never see the elimination of the billable hour and several legal project matters are simply too unique to estimate in advance. Paying on an hourly basis for such services certainly makes good economic sense, but will this change truly make legal processes more efficient for both inside and outside counsel. Eventually, the shift away from the billable hour toward sustained progress in legal productivity requires a deeper partnership between clients and firms. For law firms that are proactive and farsighted, the deepened relationship is, certainly a significant benefit.
Our in-house counsel panelists will talk about the alternative fee arrangements they have tried, what works and what hasn't worked, and how these arrangements can help them stay on budget in these current economic times.
