You are invited to attend a discussion with Arthur T. Downey, author of Civil War Lawyers: Constitutional Questions, Courtroom Dramas, and the Men Behind Them on March 1, 2012, co-sponsored by the University of Houston Law Center, the Baker Hughes Foundation and the Houston Bar Association.
The program will be held at 5:30pm at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, 1000 Louisiana, Suite 4000, Houston, TX 77002. There is no charge to attend the program.
Published by the American Bar Association, Civil War Lawyers is a comprehensive look at the under-appreciated role of the law, and of lawyers, during the American Civil War. The book explores significant legal issues arising during the period leading up to and through the Civil War. Mr. Downey provides insight into the judicial decisions and courtroom dramas that dominated the period and reviews the ways in which presidents dealt with the legality of or constitutionality of important decisions. The book also brings to life the lawyers who argued the cases and represented the positions taken during the Civil War.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Downey and hearing his presentation. If Shakespeare had read Civil War Lawyers, he would have changed his admonition in Henry VI that “The first thing we do is kill all the lawyers.” Even for non-lawyers, Downey’s research is fascinating and uplifting.
If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Tara Shockley at taras@hba.org .
Best regards,
Lee M. Emery
